This is me feeling tough before the Crossfit Open’s 20.3 workout “Diana”. Let’s just say I was propped against the barbell in a puddle of fatigue 9 minutes after this photo was taken. Every time we do a physical activity, our body breaks itself down in order to build back up again. No pain, no gain, right?  It is our body’s immune response to heal and rebuild that leaves us feeling sore, lethargic, and even exhausted after intense workouts.  Ask anyone, and dealing with post-workout inflammation can put a real damper on things, but with the advent of CBD, athletes are celebrating a new way to improve recovery and performance – physically and mentally.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response (Source).

Many athletes will report taking oral drops daily to help calm pre-performance jitters, and then using something like a lotion or salve to help soothe tired/sore muscles.  Here’s how we recommend combining the two:

There is much anecdotal evidence “out there” suggesting that athletes who take a minimum of 20-30 MG of CBD daily will experience improved mental focus and calm, while also experiencing a shorter duration of soreness and lethargy.  Since CBD is also known to help with sleep, we recommend athletes take their oral drops every day for at least 3 weeks for deeper, more restful sleep before competitions or going into a heavy training cycle.  You can read more about serving guidelines here!

When to use:  As with any lotion, the best absorption is going to happen right after a shower or workout when pores are open. Also, applying after a shower means you won’t be washing it off any time soon, which will give skin maximum time to absorb every last bit of the active ingredients + hemp extract.  Speaking of absorption – something to note is how important it is to steer clear from lotions that contain mineral oil or petroleum in their base (quite common), as these types of ingredients act as barriers on the skin, and will actually inhibit the absorption of CBD into the dermis.   Stono Creek topicals only includes natural oils and butters for rapid, chemical-free absorption!
