How to Hemp

Congratulations on choosing to learn more about how Hemp Extract – also known as CBD – can help you achieve more wellness in your life! We hope that the information on our website is helpful to you as you build your knowledge about this fascinating compound.

Please note that neither the FDA or any other medical governing body has determined a definitive “treatment structure” for the use of CBD.  And as we are also not medical experts, we want you to know that our advice is based on our own personal experience and understanding of CBD.  We strongly encourage you to seek out more information on your own, especially if you have a specific condition or ailment that you’re hoping CBD can help.  If you are on any other medications, we also encourage you to do some homework on CBD and any known interactions with your specific medication.  Please consult your doctor, or a licensed medical expert if you feel that you need real medical advice on the best way to integrate CBD into your health regimen.

Ok! Having said that, now for the fun stuff:

A single recommended serving size for each of our Sublingual Hemp Extract tinctures is based on a full 1 ml dropper. The droppers we use have lines on them at .25, .5, .75, and 1 mL for help with accurate and consistent dosing.

If you’ve never taken Hemp Extract before, we recommend starting with a .25 ML serving (marked on the dropper included with your bottle), which will allow for a gentle and gradual introduction into your system. After doing this for 1-2 weeks, we advise our customers to gradually increase their serving to 1 full recommended serving size within 1 week.  After 2 weeks, you may start to notice that you are sleeping for longer periods of time at night (fewer wake-ups), or that you feel that you are dreaming more. This is not true for everyone, but it is something we hear our customers telling us time and again.

Depending on which of our tinctures you’ve purchased, you will work your way up to either 10MG of Hemp Extract (with our Everyday Wellness Tincture) per serving or 50 MG per serving (with the Advanced Potency Tincture).

Some people choose to start with just a few drops at first and work up even more slowly (also known  as “micro-dosing”) over a period or weeks or even months.  The important thing to remember is that everyone’s body is different, and therefore serving needs can vary greatly from one person to the next.

We created the chart below to help you understand how many milligrams (MG) of hemp extract you will be taking in a given measurement.  This chart shows information for both our Everyday Wellness 300MG as well as our Advanced Potency 1500 MG Sublingual Hemp Extract products.

Additional thoughts to consider when buying CBD.

It all starts with the soil.  Hemp is mainly grown for industrial purposes, and is a known bio-accumulator, which means that it sucks up a large amount of whatever is in the soil in which it grows.

Not only that, but the growing conditions for hemp aren’t federally regulated, which makes it very difficult to know when you’re getting a high quality, clean, and safe product. Know the growing conditions of the soil, overall environment, and extraction methods as best you can.

Stono Creek only uses industrial hemp grown on US soil, as it is unknown/unverified whether hemp that comes from overseas has been grown in soil exposed to toxic spills, pesticides, or other dangerous chemicals.

Has this product undergone any 3rd party testing? And are those results readily available (and verifiable)?
Current CBD oils created by licensed producers are manufactured for the maximum health benefit. Whether that’s a careful balance of THC and CBD or a pure CBD formula, these oils have been formulated with precision.  Be sure that you can easily obtain batch testing results to verify potency and purity before buying.

How was the CBD extracted from the plant?
There are a number of methods used for extracting Hemp Extract, including:  supercritical CO2 extraction, butane, ethanol, and olive oil, to name the most common.

With Butane, ethanol, and olive oil methods, a novice home-grower can extract CBD from the hemp plant; this is good news for home-growers, but buyers should be aware that while not true in every case, it is easy for toxins (in the case of butane and ethanol) to make their way into hemp extracted at the hands of the inexperienced.

One of (if not the) highest standards of extraction is called Supercritical CO2 extraction. During this process, hemp is put under high pressure and low temperatures, extracting CBD without the need for volatile chemicals.  While it is a complex method, it is the known as a clean and safe method of extraction that ensures a pure hemp extract product.  Stono Creek Apothecary hemp products use hemp extracted using CO2 extraction.

Is it easy to find the potency of CBD in the product? Or is the label confusing/unclear?

If it’s too hard to find, does it even exist?  Not all drops are created equal when it comes to hemp extract.   Not only does the % of CBD extracted from a sample matter, but the % of CBD infused into a product is also critical for knowing how much you are putting in your body.  The FDA is not yet regulating labeling of CBD products, which means that many CBD companies are simply not disclosing what’s in the bottle – or they intentionally use deceptive, misleading terminology (such as selling low CBD Hemp OIL instead of high CBD Hemp EXTRACT).

Your label should indicate how much CBD is in each bottle at the least, and if it’s an oral tincture, it should indicate how much CBD is in each measured serving (one dropper, one capsule, etc.).

CBD, which is sometimes also referred to as Hemp extract, is an oil derived from the flower, stalks and seeds of the industrial hemp plant. This oil can be used for a variety of purposes, the most popular being consumed as a wellness supplement.
The highest standard of extraction is the CO2 method, where hemp is put under high pressure and low temperatures. This process eliminates the need for using harsh chemicals. While this is a complex method, it is the cleanest and safest method of extraction and ensures a pure hemp extract product.  Stono Creek Apothecary hemp products use hemp extracted using CO2 extraction.

All our hemp plants are grown using proprietary hemp cultivars, grown and processed in the USA.  We DO not use Chinese, European nor Canadian Hemp.   Only USA farms utilizing sustainable farming practices and zero pesticides make it into our strict standards.  All our Hemp goes through third party testing along the process to ensure purity and consistency.  Stono Creek Apothecary Hemp Oil is extracted using supercritical CO2 extraction – the purest form of extraction – whereas many hemp oils on the market are extracted using harmful chemicals.  Our extraction process uses zero chemicals in the process ensuring the most potent and pure hemp extract on the market.  All our hemp extract is manufactured in an FDA certified manufacturing facility.

In the late 1990’s the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) was discovered. The ECS is a collection of cell receptors within a human’s body, which helps to support the body’s immune system and maintain balance within the central nervous and digestive systems.  Our body’s energy, memory, metabolism, and sleep, to name a few, are all affected by the ECS. Hemp extract is being studied for how it interacts with the ECS and contributes to balance and overall well-being.

Stono Creek Apothecary products contain only Isolate Hemp Extract, which contains less than .3% THC on a dry weight basis.

Yes, Stono Creek Apothecary can legally ship its proprietary Hemp Extract products to all 50 states per THE UNITED STATES FARM BILL (Agricultural Act of 2014).  This Bill classified ‘‘Industrial Hemp’’ as the plant Cannabis Sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.  Sec. 7606 also allows for the federally legal growth, cultivation, and marketing of Industrial Hemp by states with an Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program (IHRPP) or via an institution of higher education. Stono Creek Apothecary’s proprietary Hemp Extract is sourced from a USA legal hemp program in a state that is fully compliant with the Federal Farm Bill section 7606.

We recommend consulting your physician prior to using our products.

No. Our hemp extract contains 0% THC, which is the compound in cannabis that is associated with a “high”.  Further, our extract is derived from industrial hemp (bred for low THC),  not the marijuana plant (which is bred for its higher levels of THC).
